Personal stylist intake: what to ask on the first call

14 September 2026

The first call with a new styling client sets the tone for every session that follows. Ask the right questions and you walk into the appointment with a clear brief. Miss them and you're guessing in the fitting room.

About their body and fit

  • How tall are you?
  • What size do you usually wear in tops, bottoms, dresses and shoes?
  • Are there any fit challenges? (e.g. broad shoulders, long arms, petite torso)
  • Which parts of your body do you like to highlight, and which do you prefer to skim over?

About colouring and preferences

  • What is your natural hair colour, skin tone and eye colour?
  • Are there colours you love, and colours you avoid?
  • Do you wear patterns, or do you prefer solids?
  • What fabrics feel comfortable? What textures do you dislike?

About lifestyle and goals

  • What prompted you to book a stylist now?
  • How do you spend a typical week? (work, travel, kids, events, weekends)
  • What is the one thing you want to change about your wardrobe?
  • Are you building a capsule, refreshing for a season, or solving a specific event?

About budget and shopping

  • What is your overall budget for this project?
  • Are you happy to invest in a few quality pieces, or do you prefer high-street prices?
  • Are there brands you love or retailers you avoid?
  • Do you need sustainable, local or size-inclusive options?

About contact and booking

  • Phone number and email.
  • Preferred appointment days and times.
  • Best way to reach you between sessions.
  • Any access needs or location preferences.

Why this matters long-term

These notes become the client profile you refer back to for every future session. The client doesn't have to repeat themselves, and you don't have to hunt through old texts or a paper diary to remember whether they hate navy or love it.

A good stylist CRM stores all of this in one place. We built LookLayer Studio's intake around the questions above, so the booking call naturally feeds the client profile. If you're still using a notebook, read our post on keeping track of styling clients without a paper diary.
